Birchbox June 2017 (Beta try #2)

It’s Birchbox time! Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription service that costs $10/month, here is my referral link if you’d like to try it out: Birchbox Sign-up. Sign up by June 22nd to receive a bonus Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Double the Lip (Use code BFFDAY at checkout ).

Last month was my first month trying Birchbox beta out; something went wrong and I received a normal box so after contacting customer service they refunded me the cost of my box, yay! It ended up being a decent box too! If you’re unfamiliar Beta subscribers pay $15/month and can choose from the following options:

  1. Choose a curated box instead of a normal box. These are “spotlight” boxes that focus on something specific like eye products, summer products, products for wavy hair, etc.
  2. Pick One, Skip One. Choose a product type to receive, choose a type to not receive.
  3. Trade your box for points to spend in the shop.
  4. Sample Choice. Pick one specific product from 3-5 provided choices.

So this will be second month as a beta subscriber, let’s see what happens! My box was set to arrive between June 14th and 17th but when I checked the shipping status on the 16th and the deliver by date had changed to the 24th. Grrrr! Thankfully the box didn’t take quite that long and arrived on June 20th.

20170622_181623Lovely June Birchbox.

Upon opening my box I was pleased to see that my beta selection had been delivered to me successfully! I chose Pick One, Skip One and chose an eyebrow product and a fragrance respectively. The first product in my June Beta Birchbox is a Supergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream SPF (.1 oz) in Light/Medium SPF 35. I haven’t used much Supergoop! and I need all the CC and BBs I can get this time of year so I am happy to see this in the box. Next up is a Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle (2 oz). I got one of these in a Birchbox in January of last year and it worked really great. Glad this was in the box too.

20170622_181957Birchbox Beta June 2017.

My third sample this month is the Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Foundation Primer  (.25 oz). Smashbox is amazing, I don’t use primers often but will toss this in the ol’ show box for performances when I wear heavy makeup. The next product is a Wilma Schumann Skincare Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads (1 pair). I have used these before and really like them, so another score for the box this month! Lastly is a Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Brow Pencil (.001 oz) in 3 Medium – Light to Medium Brown/Red. I was really excited to try this product but after opening the card and looking at it there are two problems:

  1. It is really small. Like teeny, tiny, itty, bitty small.
  2.  It is too light. This is the third darkest of six shades, I really needed one of the Dark Brown to Black shades, preferably warm. Also this shade is out of stock in their shop if it did happen to work for someone they sent it to.

20170622_182132Are you fucking kidding me Birchbox? My fingers will NOT be using this dexterously.

I can’t comprehend why they made this sample so small. This sample size is 1/10th of the full-size. I can’t fathom sample ratios of that size unless it’s a fragrance or lotion. Or just make the handle larger so we can actually use the damn sample.

My Birchbox June 2017 product card.

My May 2017 Birchbox contained the following 5 items: Supergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream SPF in Light/Medium SPF 35 ($2 value), Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle ($11.75 value), Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Foundation Primer ($9 value), Wilma Schumann Skincare Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads ($3.60 value), Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Brow Pencil in 3 Medium – Light to Medium Brown/Red ($2.40 value) for a total sample value of $28.75. Despite the size and shade of the brow pencil I think this is a good box! I will use all the products and think the brands are great.

ipsy Glam Bag June 2017

It’s Glam Bag time! ipsy Glam Bag is a monthly beauty subscription service that costs $10/month, here is my referral link if you’d like to give them a try: ipsy glam bag sign-up.

My bag always arrives so much later than everyone else’s (I am up in Alaska, so it makes sense) so I’m pretty antsy by the time it finally gets to my mailbox. I did sneak a peak this time so I wasn’t surprised this month. The June 2017 ipsy Glam Bag isn’t my favorite design; it’s an awful color scheme and the fabric feels cheap but it’s all about what’s inside that counts anyways!

The first sample in my June 2017 ipsy Glam bag is a the Balm Cosmetics Balm Springs Long-Wearing Blush (.028 oz) in In Full Swing. I haven’t been wearing blush often over the last few decades save for my burlesque shows but I am starting to get in to it. I have a few samples from the Balm Cosmetics and Cargo already so now I can actually compare the colors and see which one is most complimentary on my face. My second product this month is a PUR Fully Charged Mascara Travel Size Mini in Black (.14 oz), I haven’t tried any PUR mascaras so am happy to get this! The ipsy info page says that it’s “made out of magnets” which sounds fairly hyperbolic. Next up is a Hey Honey Uncover Detoxifying Mud Mask (.5 oz). I have used a few Hey Honey products before and I really liked them! I have been more in to sheet masks and acid peels recently than wash-off masks but am looking forward to giving this one a try. It’s also apparently a new item that ipsters are some of the first to try!

20170622_105659My June 2017 ipsy Glam Bag.

The fourth sample is a full-size NYX Whipped Fouette (.27 oz) in Plush (cool nude pink). This product is a lip and cheek tint and historically I have NOT liked these dual products, they tend to be sticky and not pigmented enough. I don’t think much of this brand either so I’m not sure if I’ll actually get around to trying this or just tossing it in the giveaway pile. Lastly, I was sent a light pink Beaute Basics Travel Face Blender. I don’t wear foundation often so I have never used a beauty blender but this seems pretty small. I understand that it’s a travel size but I wonder how useful it would be at this size? I’ll probably throw this in my burlesque makeup case and give it a try at the next show.

My June 2017 ipsy Glam Bag contained the following 5 items: the Balm Cosmetics Balm Springs Long-Wearing Blush in In Full Swing ($2.98 value), PUR Fully Charged Mascara Travel Size Mini in Black ($12 value), Hey Honey Uncover Detoxifying Mud Mask ($15.88 value), NYX Whipped Fouette (.27 oz) in Plush ($6 value), and a Beaute Basics Travel Face Blender ($9.99 value) for a total sample value of $46.85. Although this isn’t one of my favorite mix of samples this month I think it’s an extremely great value and am especially pleased about the mascara mini (literally my favorite product type to get) and the mud mask, and am happy to get that new blush shade.

Did anyone else get the mask or has anyone used the mascara yet? Let me know below in the comments please!

Sephora online Birthday order #2!

There are a couple of reasons this order was broken in to two; Sephora Flash Subscription ($10/year for free 2-day shipping on all online Sephora orders), I hadn’t decided on which lipsticks I wanted to purchase when I placed my first birthday order the week before, and lastly I like to place small Sephora online orders to take advantage of the free gifts with purchase.

20170413_163227Sherman inspects my boxes for Anthrax or doggie treats.

I have been spending the last few months trying different brands of lip stains and liquid lipsticks. After deliberating for about a week I decided to try out a stila Bright & Bold Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Set (3 x .05 oz). The trio comes with Beso (true red), Viola (cool lavender), and Lume (deep fuschia) and is valued at $36. Most Sephora free gifts with purchase have a minimum purchase of $25 so I went to the sale page and looked at liquid lipsticks on sale. Thankfully there was a Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain (.169 oz) in Peach Tart that was 50% off. Once my cart had over $25 worth of product I added the FARMACY Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm (.4 oz) for my free gift with purchase.

20170603_182325stila Liquid Lipstick trio, Sephora Lip Stain, Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm.

Sephora always includes 3 free samples (single use packets or fragrances generally) with every online order and lets you choose from an assortment at checkout, unfortunately they never send me my full choice of picks. For this order I chose an Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complexion Primer, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration, and a First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum but was sent a Dior Miss Dior Fragrance sample vial (1 ml), two Ken Zoki Moisturizing Skin Guardian foil packets (.06 oz), and an Hermes Le Jardin De Monsieur Li fragrance sample vial (1 ml). I was looking forward to trying the First Aid beauty combo as well as the Urban Decay primer, another Sephora free sample gone awry.

The second part of my Sephora online Birthday order was comprised of the following 3 products: stila Bright & Bold Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Set ($20), a Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in Peach Tart ($7) , and FARMACY Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm (free gift with purchase of $25) and cost a total of $27.

I ended up returning both the stila Bright & Bold Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Set and the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in Peach Tart. The stila liquid lipsticks did not live up to their claims; they flaked off within a few hours and would not stand up to a meal or drinks. The colors however were great and I’m very disappointed that they weren’t keepers. The Sephora Collection Lip Stain in Peach Tart looked awful on me, the tone was way too cool and made me look like I had Barbie lips.

Sephora online Birthday order #1!

It was my birthday recently and in order to collect my free birthday gift from Sephora I decided to place an order online since I had just recently learned about the Sephora Flash Subscription ($10/year for free 2-day shipping on all online Sephora orders)!

20170406_160032The entire, tiny birthday order.

For my free gift I chose the Caudalie Moisturizer and Serum Set which included a Moisturizing Sorbet (.33 oz) and a Radiance Serum (.33 oz). I think the other option for the month was was a mini lip stain. Now to choose an item to purchase so they will send me the free birthday gift!

20170406_160407

For my first Sephora Flash order I decided to get the tarte Wide Awake Eye Set which includes a Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment (.08 oz) ; a Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara (.13 oz) ; and a pair of Pack Your Bags 911 Undereye Rescue Patches. This is a a really great value set if you are in need of some travel eye products or as a small gift. It’s my first time trying any of these 3 tarte products and I am thoroughly satisfied. The mascara is decent and I actually like it more than a lot of better rated mascaras because it doesn’t clump on my lashes by coat 2 and 3. I already use tarte’s Maracuja Oil every night and this eye cream may become my next full-size, it’s lightweight, creamy, and feels refreshing. The eye patches made my under eye area feel plump and hydrated until well in to the next day, though I’m not sure I’d purchase a full pack (I already use sheet masks and this is another time consuming step I’m not ready to start in my routine).

20170406_160531The tarte Wide Awake Eye Set sans packaging. Totally worth it.

Next I had to decide on which of Sephora’s many, constantly changing free gift-with-purchases (they can always be found at http://www.sephora.com/beauty-deals) I wanted so that I could add an appropriately priced item to my cart. I decided that I wanted the Dermarche Labs FULFILL Hyaluronic Acid Topical Wrinkle Filler deluxe sample (.06 oz) free with any $25 purchase, and my cart was already at $22. I went to the sale page and added a SEPHORA COLLECTION Colorful Eyeshadow (.07 oz) in Mermaid Tail to my cart.

Mermaid Tail and swatch.

My Sephora Online Birthday Order was comprised of the following items: Caudalie Moisturizer and Serum Set (free birthday gift), tarte Wide Awake Eye Set ($12), SEPHORA COLLECTION Colorful Eyeshadow in Mermaid Tail ($5), Sephora Flash Shipping 1-year Subscription ($10), and a Dermarche Labs FULFILL Hyaluronic Acid Topical Wrinkle Filler deluxe sample (free gift with purchase) for total cost of $27.

Sephora always includes 3 free samples (single use packets or fragrances generally) with every online order and lets you choose from an assortment at checkout, unfortunately they never send me my full choice of picks. For this order I chose a tarte Brighter Days Highlighting Moisturizer, a First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum, and a belif True Cream Aqua Bomb (all foil packets) but was sent an it Cosmetics CC Cream with SPF 50 and the belif True Cream Aqua Bomb. I really wanted to try that highlighting moisturizer!

Ulta online Birthday Purchases

I went in to ULTA around my birthday, which was also during the 21 days of beauty sale to snag a crap-load of beauty steals and my free birthday gift. When I went in that day they were out of stock in-store and online of one of the items I specifically went in for, the Tarte Maracuja Oil (1.7 oz) which was 50% off so I kept anxiously checking every day online to see if the oil was back in stock.

The next day I placed an online order for an Ulta Custom Eye Shadow Palette 8 Pan which was free with purchase of 4 Ulta Eye Shadows (normally $12.50);  four Ulta Eye Shadow Singles in Under the Sea, Bronze Babe, Italian Espress, and Valentine (25% off, normally $4/each); and 2 Essence Lip Liners in Satin Mauve and In the Nude (buy one get one free priced at $1.99/each). I chose the skincare sampler as my online purchase free gift and it came with the following foil packet samples: 2 Clinique for Men Moisturizing Lotions, an Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Micro-Sculpting Cream, and a Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer.20170603_182846Online birthday purchase part one

20170603_182924My first Ulta online birthday order consisted of the following 7 items: Ulta Custom Eye Shadow Palette 8 Pan;  Ulta Eye Shadow Singles in Under the Sea, Bronze Babe, Italian Espress, and Valentine; 2 Essence Lip Liners in Satin Mauve and In the Nude and cost only $13.99. I earned double Ulta Rewards points for this purchase because it was during my birthday month!

It wasn’t until five days after my initial in-store visit the oil was back in stock online! At $48 a bottle that is a huge savings and this is one of my holy grails. This oil keeps my face hydrated during cold and hot months, during AHA/BHA use, and feels amazing. Also on sale were the Ulta Lip Butters (.11 oz) so I purchased Dainty on sale at $3 from $9.  I chose the skincare sampler as my online purchase free gift and it came with the following foil packet samples: belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb and an IT Cosmetics CC Cream SPF 50+.

20170603_181901Online birthday purchase part two

My second Ulta online birthday order consisted of two purchased items: Tarte Maracuja Oil and an Ulta Lip Butter in Dainty and cost $28. Over the course of about a week I made one in-store and two online Ulta purchases, spending a total of $76.46.

Did you do any of the 21 days of Beauty at Ulta? Were they out of stock of any of the featured items?

Ulta in-store Birthday Purchase

I went in to ULTA around my birthday, which was also during the 21 days of beauty sale (I know, I know I’m super late in posting) to snag a crap-load of beauty steals and my free birthday gift. My boyfriend’s mother heard I was planning my trip around what was on sale on certain days and gave me a gift card as a birthday gift so when the day came that the Ultimate Mix of products I wanted to purchase were on sale I was ready to head to my local Ulta with gift card in hand. I rarely go in to my local Ulta because it is easier to calculate the best deal in my cart online so this day was a rare exception.

All the sale items for that day/week/event were out at the front so I was able to pick up those items very easily. The reason I went in this specific day was because the Benefit They’re Real Tinted Lash Primer (.3 oz) was on sale that day for $12 from $24 in-store only so I put my first full-size of that in my basket. I am a huge fan of this primer, however until this point I had owned 3 minis. I use it as a lash primer, by itself on my lower lashes because the look is more natural than a mascara, and as a filler after I use brow pencils on my eyebrows. It works really well to cover up the few white eyelashes and eyebrow hairs I have. I must say though after using the full size I have been disappointed; for some strange reason the wand works better on the minis than the full-size. The full-size is unwieldy and leaves more product on your lash than it should and I won’t be purchasing anything but mini versions  of it from now on.

I picked up some Ulta Gel Eye Liner Pencils in Night Sky, Copper, and  Black/Brown on sale for $3 from $8 and and Ulta Automatic Eyeliner Metallic in Golden Eyes also on sale for $3 from $8. I also picked up an Ulta Amped Waterproof Mascara in Jet Black (.2 oz) on sale for $4 from $10.50, I had never tried any of their mascaras so thought it was a good price to give it a try. Same goes for the Ulta Bath Fragrance Mist in Sugared Vanilla (6 oz) for $4 from $9.50.

20170402_143313Ulta Automatic Eyeliner Metallic in Golden Eyes; Ulta Gel Eye Liner Pencils in Copper, Black/Brown, & Night Sky.

I was also planning on picking up a Tarte Maracuja Oil which was 50% the entire event but they were out of stock both in-store and online when I got home to check that day. The last thing I purchased that day was an item from the clearance rack, a Sally Hansen Gel Be Gone Removal Tool for $2.47. I’ve never used one of these but only use gel polish so will give it a try! It is supposed to scrape the gel polish off in layers without taking up layers of your nail. The birthday gift I picked up at the check out register was a Benefit The Pore Professional Primer (.25 oz).

20170331_081042     My Ulta in-store purchase consisted of 8 purchased items and an in-store only birthday gift and came to a total cost of $34.47. I earned 68 Ulta Rewards points from this purchase because it was made in my birthday month so was worth double points, YAY!

Do you do Ulta or Sephora Rewards? Let me know which one and why in the comments!

Birchbox May 2017 – Beta Unboxing!

I am finally getting back in to the swing of things after being out of the blog game for a few months and was super excited to get my first month of Birchbox Beta. If you’re not a Birchbox subscriber but would like to try it out, here’s a referral link: https://www.birchbox.com/invite/96z2j. Sign up this month to Get a FREE full-size, high-shine M·A·C Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Look Lively when you join (Use code IWANTUMAC at checkout).

Now there are a couple of reasons I chose to go Beta:

  •  I do not wear perfume and 6 samples a year (the minimum Birchbox profile lets you set) is still far too many,
  •  I think shampoo and conditioner samples are cheap (same with 1 ml sample of fragrance) and I also don’t use them,
  •  Birchbox for me is mainly a skincare subscription, I get my makeup samples from ipsy, so being able to pull in that extra customization to ensure they are products I will use seems worth an extra $5 for me,
  •  I stopped subscribing to WIN! (low value) and Beauty Beyond Borders (sold off their business and basically said fuck you to their grandfathered in customers who had a $2/month discount) so though I could just pocket the $22 savings, I’m  easily justifying the $5 expenditure.

Birchbox Beta offers a decent amount of choices per month that also interested me. Other than choosing to get the regular box beta subscribers can choose one of the many curated boxes, skip the box and swap for points in the shop, pick a sample from the spoiler list, or Pick one/Skip One where you choose a product type to be sent and another product type to skip. Pick One, Skip was my first month’s beta box choice though I was tempted to pick a sample from the spoiler list because one of the items was a MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream that I wanted to try. For my May Beta Birchbox I chose to Pick an exfoliator and Skip a fragrance.

20170602_162858Lovely box with gorgeous, muted tones.

I am ridiculously excited as I tear open the outer cardboard box, I love surprises and love new things so a beta box was twice as nice! Or so I thought… Upon opening the box the first thing I see is a fragrance sample of CLEAN Reserve Rain Reserve Blend Eau de Parfum(1.5 ml)! DAMN IT JIM! I’m a beta subscriber, not a basic bitch! Surprise, surprise as I look around the box angrily I do not see an exfoliator. Pick One, Skip One was a Swing and a Miss.

Now don’t get me wrong, it is not a bad box in fact other than the perfume I think it is a pretty good box, it just wasn’t wasn’t I explicitly paid 50% more for.  The second sample in my bag is of course the M·A·C Cosmetics Strobe Cream (.2 oz) which I was interested in trying, unfortunately my sample is Silverite instead of the Pinklite and it is probably going to be too light for me. The next product in my May Birchbox is a OUAI Wave Spray (1 oz). I got this in my August 20167 Birchbox too, but the size was definitely larger. I will use this though I’m not particularly in to these types of styling products.

20170602_163657

The fourth sample is The Beauty Crop’s Fabulous Flocking Lashes Waterproof Mascara (.14 oz). My experience with this brand has not been great, but most of that has been with their lip products so I am hoping this mascara is a bit more impressive. I like the name but it also makes me think of flocking from Christmas trees and that’s not exactly evocative of what I desire from a mascara. The tube looks deceptively like a full-size mascara but alas it is not, it is about 20% of the .71 oz full-size. I personally love short tubes of sample mascara and really wish they would have just sent a shorter tube. Deceptive packaging is irritating and not exactly ecological. UPDATE: I was just informed by another redditor that this is a tubing mascara. If you’re unfamiliar, tubing mascaras are made with flexible polymers that build on to the lash and can be layered on to dramatically extend length. This makes me way more excited to try it out! My last sample this month is a Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+ WetForce (.64 oz). I am most excited about this one, Shiseido is a great brand and at $18/oz I wouldn’t buy this without trying it first. I just did purchase through Birchbox a sunscreen sampler though, so I am not in need of any sunscreen (if so I would have used it as my Pick One for the month).

20170602_163009May Product Card (does it REALLY need to be so big?)

My May 2017 Birchbox contained the following 5 items: CLEAN Reserve Rain Reserve Blend Eau de Parfum ($1.39 value),  M·A·C Cosmetics Strobe Cream ($3.88 value), OUAI Wave Spray ($5.20 value),The Beauty Crop’s Fabulous Flocking Lashes Waterproof Mascara ($3.93 value), Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+ WetForce ($10.81 value) for a total sample value of $25.21.  This is a decent box with a decent value, other than being miffed about my Beta selections not going through I am fairly pleased with the contents. I emailed customer service about the situation and explicitly requested to be sent my Beta box as a replacement since in the past I was not happy with what Birchbox offered as compensation for issues. An agent responded the next day and refunded the cost of my May Beta Birchbox, which was $15. That works wonderful for me, I got a free month and hopefully my selections go through for the upcoming June box!

Does anyone else do Birchbox Beta? How has your experience been?
