Ulta online Birthday Purchases

I went in to ULTA around my birthday, which was also during the 21 days of beauty sale to snag a crap-load of beauty steals and my free birthday gift. When I went in that day they were out of stock in-store and online of one of the items I specifically went in for, the Tarte Maracuja Oil (1.7 oz) which was 50% off so I kept anxiously checking every day online to see if the oil was back in stock.

The next day I placed an online order for an Ulta Custom Eye Shadow Palette 8 Pan which was free with purchase of 4 Ulta Eye Shadows (normally $12.50);  four Ulta Eye Shadow Singles in Under the Sea, Bronze Babe, Italian Espress, and Valentine (25% off, normally $4/each); and 2 Essence Lip Liners in Satin Mauve and In the Nude (buy one get one free priced at $1.99/each). I chose the skincare sampler as my online purchase free gift and it came with the following foil packet samples: 2 Clinique for Men Moisturizing Lotions, an Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Micro-Sculpting Cream, and a Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer.20170603_182846Online birthday purchase part one

20170603_182924My first Ulta online birthday order consisted of the following 7 items: Ulta Custom Eye Shadow Palette 8 Pan;  Ulta Eye Shadow Singles in Under the Sea, Bronze Babe, Italian Espress, and Valentine; 2 Essence Lip Liners in Satin Mauve and In the Nude and cost only $13.99. I earned double Ulta Rewards points for this purchase because it was during my birthday month!

It wasn’t until five days after my initial in-store visit the oil was back in stock online! At $48 a bottle that is a huge savings and this is one of my holy grails. This oil keeps my face hydrated during cold and hot months, during AHA/BHA use, and feels amazing. Also on sale were the Ulta Lip Butters (.11 oz) so I purchased Dainty on sale at $3 from $9.  I chose the skincare sampler as my online purchase free gift and it came with the following foil packet samples: belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb and an IT Cosmetics CC Cream SPF 50+.

20170603_181901Online birthday purchase part two

My second Ulta online birthday order consisted of two purchased items: Tarte Maracuja Oil and an Ulta Lip Butter in Dainty and cost $28. Over the course of about a week I made one in-store and two online Ulta purchases, spending a total of $76.46.

Did you do any of the 21 days of Beauty at Ulta? Were they out of stock of any of the featured items?

Ulta in-store Birthday Purchase

I went in to ULTA around my birthday, which was also during the 21 days of beauty sale (I know, I know I’m super late in posting) to snag a crap-load of beauty steals and my free birthday gift. My boyfriend’s mother heard I was planning my trip around what was on sale on certain days and gave me a gift card as a birthday gift so when the day came that the Ultimate Mix of products I wanted to purchase were on sale I was ready to head to my local Ulta with gift card in hand. I rarely go in to my local Ulta because it is easier to calculate the best deal in my cart online so this day was a rare exception.

All the sale items for that day/week/event were out at the front so I was able to pick up those items very easily. The reason I went in this specific day was because the Benefit They’re Real Tinted Lash Primer (.3 oz) was on sale that day for $12 from $24 in-store only so I put my first full-size of that in my basket. I am a huge fan of this primer, however until this point I had owned 3 minis. I use it as a lash primer, by itself on my lower lashes because the look is more natural than a mascara, and as a filler after I use brow pencils on my eyebrows. It works really well to cover up the few white eyelashes and eyebrow hairs I have. I must say though after using the full size I have been disappointed; for some strange reason the wand works better on the minis than the full-size. The full-size is unwieldy and leaves more product on your lash than it should and I won’t be purchasing anything but mini versions  of it from now on.

I picked up some Ulta Gel Eye Liner Pencils in Night Sky, Copper, and  Black/Brown on sale for $3 from $8 and and Ulta Automatic Eyeliner Metallic in Golden Eyes also on sale for $3 from $8. I also picked up an Ulta Amped Waterproof Mascara in Jet Black (.2 oz) on sale for $4 from $10.50, I had never tried any of their mascaras so thought it was a good price to give it a try. Same goes for the Ulta Bath Fragrance Mist in Sugared Vanilla (6 oz) for $4 from $9.50.

20170402_143313Ulta Automatic Eyeliner Metallic in Golden Eyes; Ulta Gel Eye Liner Pencils in Copper, Black/Brown, & Night Sky.

I was also planning on picking up a Tarte Maracuja Oil which was 50% the entire event but they were out of stock both in-store and online when I got home to check that day. The last thing I purchased that day was an item from the clearance rack, a Sally Hansen Gel Be Gone Removal Tool for $2.47. I’ve never used one of these but only use gel polish so will give it a try! It is supposed to scrape the gel polish off in layers without taking up layers of your nail. The birthday gift I picked up at the check out register was a Benefit The Pore Professional Primer (.25 oz).

20170331_081042     My Ulta in-store purchase consisted of 8 purchased items and an in-store only birthday gift and came to a total cost of $34.47. I earned 68 Ulta Rewards points from this purchase because it was made in my birthday month so was worth double points, YAY!

Do you do Ulta or Sephora Rewards? Let me know which one and why in the comments!

Birchbox May 2017 – Beta Unboxing!

I am finally getting back in to the swing of things after being out of the blog game for a few months and was super excited to get my first month of Birchbox Beta. If you’re not a Birchbox subscriber but would like to try it out, here’s a referral link: https://www.birchbox.com/invite/96z2j. Sign up this month to Get a FREE full-size, high-shine M·A·C Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Look Lively when you join (Use code IWANTUMAC at checkout).

Now there are a couple of reasons I chose to go Beta:

  •  I do not wear perfume and 6 samples a year (the minimum Birchbox profile lets you set) is still far too many,
  •  I think shampoo and conditioner samples are cheap (same with 1 ml sample of fragrance) and I also don’t use them,
  •  Birchbox for me is mainly a skincare subscription, I get my makeup samples from ipsy, so being able to pull in that extra customization to ensure they are products I will use seems worth an extra $5 for me,
  •  I stopped subscribing to WIN! (low value) and Beauty Beyond Borders (sold off their business and basically said fuck you to their grandfathered in customers who had a $2/month discount) so though I could just pocket the $22 savings, I’m  easily justifying the $5 expenditure.

Birchbox Beta offers a decent amount of choices per month that also interested me. Other than choosing to get the regular box beta subscribers can choose one of the many curated boxes, skip the box and swap for points in the shop, pick a sample from the spoiler list, or Pick one/Skip One where you choose a product type to be sent and another product type to skip. Pick One, Skip was my first month’s beta box choice though I was tempted to pick a sample from the spoiler list because one of the items was a MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream that I wanted to try. For my May Beta Birchbox I chose to Pick an exfoliator and Skip a fragrance.

20170602_162858Lovely box with gorgeous, muted tones.

I am ridiculously excited as I tear open the outer cardboard box, I love surprises and love new things so a beta box was twice as nice! Or so I thought… Upon opening the box the first thing I see is a fragrance sample of CLEAN Reserve Rain Reserve Blend Eau de Parfum(1.5 ml)! DAMN IT JIM! I’m a beta subscriber, not a basic bitch! Surprise, surprise as I look around the box angrily I do not see an exfoliator. Pick One, Skip One was a Swing and a Miss.

Now don’t get me wrong, it is not a bad box in fact other than the perfume I think it is a pretty good box, it just wasn’t wasn’t I explicitly paid 50% more for.  The second sample in my bag is of course the M·A·C Cosmetics Strobe Cream (.2 oz) which I was interested in trying, unfortunately my sample is Silverite instead of the Pinklite and it is probably going to be too light for me. The next product in my May Birchbox is a OUAI Wave Spray (1 oz). I got this in my August 20167 Birchbox too, but the size was definitely larger. I will use this though I’m not particularly in to these types of styling products.

20170602_163657

The fourth sample is The Beauty Crop’s Fabulous Flocking Lashes Waterproof Mascara (.14 oz). My experience with this brand has not been great, but most of that has been with their lip products so I am hoping this mascara is a bit more impressive. I like the name but it also makes me think of flocking from Christmas trees and that’s not exactly evocative of what I desire from a mascara. The tube looks deceptively like a full-size mascara but alas it is not, it is about 20% of the .71 oz full-size. I personally love short tubes of sample mascara and really wish they would have just sent a shorter tube. Deceptive packaging is irritating and not exactly ecological. UPDATE: I was just informed by another redditor that this is a tubing mascara. If you’re unfamiliar, tubing mascaras are made with flexible polymers that build on to the lash and can be layered on to dramatically extend length. This makes me way more excited to try it out! My last sample this month is a Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+ WetForce (.64 oz). I am most excited about this one, Shiseido is a great brand and at $18/oz I wouldn’t buy this without trying it first. I just did purchase through Birchbox a sunscreen sampler though, so I am not in need of any sunscreen (if so I would have used it as my Pick One for the month).

20170602_163009May Product Card (does it REALLY need to be so big?)

My May 2017 Birchbox contained the following 5 items: CLEAN Reserve Rain Reserve Blend Eau de Parfum ($1.39 value),  M·A·C Cosmetics Strobe Cream ($3.88 value), OUAI Wave Spray ($5.20 value),The Beauty Crop’s Fabulous Flocking Lashes Waterproof Mascara ($3.93 value), Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+ WetForce ($10.81 value) for a total sample value of $25.21.  This is a decent box with a decent value, other than being miffed about my Beta selections not going through I am fairly pleased with the contents. I emailed customer service about the situation and explicitly requested to be sent my Beta box as a replacement since in the past I was not happy with what Birchbox offered as compensation for issues. An agent responded the next day and refunded the cost of my May Beta Birchbox, which was $15. That works wonderful for me, I got a free month and hopefully my selections go through for the upcoming June box!

Does anyone else do Birchbox Beta? How has your experience been?

ipsy Glam Bag May 2017 Unbagging

The next paragraph is a bummer, skip to below the picture to avoid sad things!

It has been about 2 months since my last blog posts due to my father becoming deathly ill. He battled his very late diagnosed stage 4 cancers for about 9 weeks before dying on May 8th, 2017. He was 59. I don’t want to be a downer but life happens fast so don’t forget to get your recommended screenings and try to live a happy and healthy life while you’re here.

On to the April 2017 ipsy Glam Bag unbagging!

20170528_191011

The May ipsy Glam Bag is pretty freaking cute. The tiny ice cream cone and popsicle icons are adorable and the bag is plastic so should be waterproof (fingers crossed)! I didn’t get a product card this month, not sure if ipsy is finally moving away from those or if mine was just overlooked.

The first sample in my May ipsy Glam bag is a Vasanti Cosmetics Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator Exfoliating Cleanser (.7 oz). I just got a sample of Vasanti’s BrightenUp! Moisturizer in my Birchbox last month and am new to the brand so I will use these together for however long they last, I’m guessing about two weeks. The second product I received is a pur-lisse BB Tinted Moist Cream SPF 30 in Medium (.34 oz). Just in time for summer! I was just running out of BB sample tubes, this one arrived just in time.  Next up in my May Glam Bag is a Caked Makeup Lip Fondant (.24 oz) in Low Key. I have not tried Caked before but am flying through liquid lipsticks that leave me disappointed so am mos def ready to try another brand! The color looks decent and the description says it can be layered for a light stain to heavy matte look.

20170528_191621

The fourth sample this month is an IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara (.17 oz) in Black. I have only used a few IT Cosmetics products and I don’t have much of an opinion of them but I can not get enough travel size tubes of mascara. I love them and I want them everywhere, in my bag, in my desk, on random shelves, EVERYWHERE. My last item in the May bag is the Urban Decay Afterglow  Highlighter (.08 oz) in Sin. Urban Decay is awesome, all their products are awesome, and I love that their samples are usually in pans that can be put in a palette. I’m starting to get quite a few powder highlighters from subscription services, time to change up my preferences so I don’t become overstocked.

My May 2017 ipsy Glam Bag contained the following 5 items: Vasanti Cosmetics Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator Exfoliating Cleanser ($6 value), Caked Makeup Lip Fondant (.24 oz) in Low Key ($11 value), pur-lisse BB Tinted Moist Cream SPF 30 in Medium ($10 value), IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara in Black ($10 value), and an Urban Decay Afterglow  Highlighter in Sin ($5 value) for a total sample value of $42. I’m very happy with this month’s bag! I will use every item in here, really needed the mascara and the BB Cream, and am currently on a quest for great liquid lipstick so needed more to try!

How was your May Glam Bag? Has anyone tried the IT Cosmetics mascara?

Birchbox April 2017 Unboxing

The next paragraph is a bummer, skip to below the picture to avoid sad things!

It has been about 2 months since my last blog posts due to my father becoming deathly ill. He battled his very late diagnosed stage 4 cancers for about 9 weeks before dying on May 8th, 2017. He was 59. I don’t want to be a downer but life happens fast so don’t forget to get your recommended screenings and try to live a happy and healthy life while you’re here. On to the extremely late Birchbox April 2017 unboxing!

20170515_083333   This month’s Birchbox design is simple and gorgeous.

20170515_083552I adore the delicate colors and simple drawings in the box and on the product card.

The first sample I received in my April 2017 Birchbox is a TokyoMilk Dark Bulletproof Eau De Parfum (1 ml) vial. I don’t use perfumes, I think they are rude in public spaces however I have liked the few from TokyoMilk that I have sniffed previously so I will give this one a try sometime when it is just my boyfriend and I as he does like perfume. Next up is a sample tube Vasanti BrightenUp! New Skin Amplifying Moisturizer (.2 oz), I like Vasanti and my skin soaks up moisturizer faster than I can drink water so I am looking forward to trying this out. The third item in my box is a nearly full size tube (2 ml) of The Beauty Crop GRLPWR Liquid Lipstick in Imma Bawse. So far I haven’t been impressed with The Beauty Crop’s products, and it’s mostly lipsticks I can recall trying. I would have been much happier to get the shade Che Guava as it is a neutral mauve that I think would look very good on me. Imma Bawse is a very intense rusty red and I orange or rusty reds don’t do much to flatter my skintone or yellowing teeth.

20170515_083540

The next Birchbox sample is a Number 4 Jour d’automne Sugar Texturizing Spray (1 oz). I am only familiar with this brand thorough Birchbox, it seems decent. Hair products are on my list of least favorite things to get in a beauty box but I will probably use this little bottle up pretty fast if it works. My last item in my April 2017 Birchbox is a Schmidt’s Deodorant Stick in Lavender + Sage (2.65 oz). Deodorant? Really Birchbox? I’m not sure why they would send this, nothing in my profile says that I am interested in body or bath products and it just feels weird to get deodorant in a beauty subscription box. Like did EVERYONE get this item because otherwise I don’t understand. Thankfully it is a full stick, not some little travel size (that would have just enraged subscribers, lol)!

My April 2017 Birchbox contained the following 5 items: TokyoMilk Dark Bulletproof Eau De Parfum ($.89 value), Vasanti BrightenUp! New Skin Amplifying Moisturizer ($3.50 value), The Beauty Crop GRLPWR Liquid Lipstick in Imma Bawse ($12 value), Number 4 Jour d’automne Sugar Texturizing Spray ($4 value), Schmidt’s Deodorant Stick in Lavender + Sage ($7 value) for a total sample value of $26.89. I’m not very happy with this month’s box; as with many of my Birchboxes there’s a hair product and a perfume sample which I am not a fan of, I’m disappointed in getting deodorant, and I have poor expectations of the liquid lipstick. Basically the $3.50 sample of moisturizer is the one thing I like, but I will use that damned deodorant on principle so this box has a better value to me.

How was your April Birchbox? DID YOU GET THE FUCKING DEODORANT?!

ipsy Glam Bag April 2017 Unbagging

The next paragraph is a bummer, skip to below the picture to avoid sad things!

It has been about 2 months since my last blog posts due to my father becoming deathly ill. He battled his very late diagnosed stage 4 cancers for about 9 weeks before dying on May 8th, 2017. He was 59. I don’t want to be a downer but life happens fast so don’t forget to get your recommended screenings and try to live a happy and healthy life while you’re here. On to the super-duper late April 2017 ipsy unbagging!

20170504_082505     April’s theme was sideshow! I really liked the look of the insert card (I am so in to Bailey’s whole look and I thought Gabriel’s western ensemble was adorable) and the website, but like many users thought the bag was pretty ugly looking. I was pleased to see that the coral was more of an electric coral or salmon than a neon red-orange and that it is durable (thick and splash-proof)!

20170504_082313     The first sample in my April 2017 ipsy bag is the MicaBeauty Highlighting Powder in Shade #3 (.31 oz). I am unfamiliar with MicaBeauty. The website says all natural ingredients so I am happy to give this a try, especially wet as an eye-shadow. Next up is the Glamour Dolls x Lisa Frank Angle Blush Brush. I can not stand how hideous this brush handle is. I love the white to pink brush bristles and use most the cutesy brushes ipsy sends out but not this one. I hated Lisa Frank in elementary school and apparently I still do, blech to this atrocity. My third sample this month is Hanalei’s Aloe Soothing Gel (.35 oz).  I have used a few products made by Hanalei, all received in subscription boxes and I have liked every one. I Don’t think I’d shell out the bucks for something as simple as an aloe gel but their other products have been on point. Summer is here so this will be a great item to bring hiking or to the beach where a full size is a hindrance.

The next sample is a Hey Honey Bésame Mucho Lip Balm (.27 oz). Hey Honey is another brand that I know only through subscription services and that I like. I am starting to get a bit tired of lip balms in my monthly boxes but I feel like this one is going to be an exceptional one far above an average tube. The last item in my April 2017 ipsy bag is ColourPop Cosmetics Crème Gel Pencil in Mr. Bing (.01 oz). I’m not a big fan of ColourPop Cosmetics, I’ve had really bad results with their lip stains and although I have loved the color of some of their eyeliners they dry out fast. I was really hoping that I was going to get Show Me (copper) again or DTLA (deep blue) but ended up getting Mr. Bing which is brown and I can’t see myself wearing. It is better than getting black eyeliner, but not as great as a metallic or a bright color.

My April 2017 ipsy Glam Bag contained the following 5 items: the MicaBeauty Highlighting Powder ($16 value), Glamour Dolls x Lisa Frank Angle Blush Brush ($10 value), Hanalei’s Aloe Soothing Gel ($4 value), Hey Honey Bésame Mucho Lip Balm ($7 value), ColourPop Cosmetics Crème Gel Pencil ($5 value) for a total sample value of $42. This month my ipsy bag was okay.  I won’t be using the blush brush because I don’t want to ever have to look at it again, I’m going to make myself try the brown eyeliner for experimentation purposes, and although I will definitely use the lip balm, highlighting powder, and aloe gel I’m not really excited about any of the items.

How was your April ipsy Bag? Did you get a ColourPop Gel Liner?

Tarteist Lip Paint Review

I got this Tarte Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint in Vibin in my last ipsy Glam Bag and have been looking forward to trying it out. It looks like a deep, rusty vermillion color though on the website it describes it as a wine shade (I am not seeing that AT ALL). A couple of days ago it was my birthday and it also happened to be a snow day so bam! day off. My partner and I decided to go have lunch at BurgerFi, it’s very close to my place and I really like their veggie burgers. I exfoliated and moisturized my lips about 15 minutes before application then applied first to my lip lines and then filled them in. The color is very dark and unforgiving to mistakes, even more so because the paint dries extremely fast. I did not do such a great job on my lines but knowing I’d be eating within in an hour I wasn’t all that concerned. I felt this color was a little much at first, it’s so deep and, well, rusty colored. I would be very worried if I was ever offered wine of this color.

I let the paint dry for about 20 minutes before leaving the house and felt more comfortable venturing out at 1:00 pm with such a warm, dark shade. It was a total of about 45 minutes before I began eating the amazing VegeFi burger pictured below.

20170329_131443

The first napkin wipe revealed lip paint on it… By the end of the burger this was the result. Outer edges obliterated, flakes, inner lips completely bare, and uneven shading.

20170329_132136

Boooooooooooooo.

Seriously so disappointing. The website claims this is an all day wearing, transfer proof lip paint. NOPE. I could wear this to work and reapply after lunch but if I’m doing that, I’d rather just wear a creamy, hydrating nude lipstick.

My rating for the Tarte Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint in Vibin is 2/10. This product doesn’t do what it says and the color isn’t at all like the product description. It only gets 2 points because it dries super quick, only takes one layer, and won’t kiss off. Drinking or eating will destroy it.

Has anyone else tried any of the quick dry matte lip paints? How was the wearing and were the colors as described?
