Ulta 5x points purchase

Ulta is having a 5x points earned on all Ulta products promotion until July 22nd and I’ve had a $20 Ulta Gift Card I have been holding on to for about 3 months now waiting for a good time to use. Yesterday morning I received an Ulta email with a coupon for a free Smashbox eyeshadow duo with any in-store or online purchase today only so decided to head on it to my local Ulta after work. I have been absolutely loving the Ulta Gel Eyeliners I bought last time I went in so knew I’d probably end up getting some more shades. If you haven’t tried these, do. These are bold, long-lasting and practically budge-proof without makeup remover.

First upon arriving at Ulta I went back to the couple of clearance areas and found an Ulta Concealer in Light Warm (.05 oz) on sale for $2.29 from $10. 20170720_171510Then I went to the Ulta Gel Eyeliners (.04 oz) and swatched the ones I was interested in.

Here they are in natural, outdoor light.

From Left to Right: Aqua, Starry Night, Peacock, Plum, Storm, and Olive Oil.

20170720_175354I decided on the Olive Oil, Starry Night, and Aqua.

20170721_094106Ulta Gel Eyeliners: Inner corner Aqua to Olive Oil. Put on quickly outside on a bench, Tarte Tarteist Lash Paint on lashes.

20170720_17515620170720_182139 (1)

The free eyeshadow is a Smashbox Cover Shot Eye Duo in Turned On & Psyched.

These colors are awesome! Very shimmery, warm and not near as dark as they look in the pan. Inside light.

20170720_175100     The Ulta Gel Eye Liners were buy 2 get 1 free and I was able to use a coupon for $3.50 off a $15 purchase so I ended up using $14.79 of my gift card to get the 5 items above and earned a total of 73 Ultamate Rewards Points!

Did anyone else grab anything from Ulta during this promotion?

Organics Everyday Mission with MyMagazine Sharing Network

At the beginning of the year I received an email invitation to sign up for a program called MyMagazine Sharing Network. Looking at the website it appears that they had obtained my information from my Fred Meyers Rewards Card (a grocery store shopping rewards program) so I signed up because I figured why the hell not, I’ll probably get some more coupons for things I use.

A few times throughout the year I would receive invitations to do small missions, sharing specific theme posts via instagram or twitter and receiving points in return. I did them all. What the points are actually for is unclear to me. A few weeks ago I got an invitation to do an “Organics Everyday” Mission and signed up. A few days later I received an email saying that I would be receiving a box for the mission, hurrah! Then a few days ago I got an email saying my box had shipped, huzzah! Today I got the box in the mail! I did not know what to expect, but was thinking I’d get like a free snack size chips and some coupons. I was pleasantly surprised.

My Organics Everyday Mission Box with MyMagazine Sharing Network included:

  1. Simply Organic Tostitos Scoops (8 oz)
  2. Garden of Eatin’ Organic Nacho Corn Tortilla Chips (1.5 oz)
  3. Garden of Eatin’ Organic Ranch Corn Tortilla Chips (1.5 oz)
  4. Bush’s Best New Organic Garbonzo Beans (15 oz)
  5. Coupon to redeem FOR FREE: Santa Cruz Organic Carbonated Beverage (Any Variety 12 oz)
  6. Coupon to redeem FOR FREE: Simple Truth Organic Peanut Powder
  7. Coupon to redeem FOR FREE: Any Variety Teas’ Tea Organic Pure & Smooth Green Tea or Organic Peach Ginger Black Tea (16.9 oz)
  8. Coupon to redeem FOR FREE: Sweet Leaf Iced Tea (Any variety 16 oz)
  9. Coupon to redeem FOR FREE: Horizon: Mac & Cheese, Crackers, Good & Go! Snack Tray, Single Serve Milk Box OR 6-PK, OR Half Gallon Milk

20170720_184634.jpgThe organic booty!

Seriously a much larger mission box than I could have expected! Of course for receiving these items I am letting everyone know that they sent them to me for free. I will do another post with my honest feedback of each of the items after tasting the organic products they sent and visiting my local Fred Meyer to get some more organic products to sample for free!

Birchbox Select July 2017 (Beta box #3)

It’s Birchbox time! Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription service that costs $10/month, here is my referral link if you’d like to try it out: Birchbox Sign-up. Use code ORIBESHINE to get a free travel-size Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream when you join or code MESMERIZE to get a Pixi by Petra Eye Shadow when you rejoin at checkout.

This is my third month subscribing to Birchbox Select – Beta. Here’s my write-up of the program if you haven’t heard of it and here are my unboxings of my first & second months. For the third time I went with the Pick One, Skip One option. I picked Skincare – Makeup Remover and skipped Fragrance.

20170717_142245

I was surprised at the box design, it seems very wintery to me but I do like the colors and pattern. The first sample in my box is my chosen sample type of the month, makeup remover, and is a Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Gel Eye Makeup Remover (.23 oz). Marcelle is a decent brand and the only makeup I do wear daily is eye makeup so this is a very relevant sample that will be used right away. The next product in my July Birchbox Select is the Jouer Lip Enhancer (.15 oz). I haven’t used anything by this brand but the product is described as a sheer tinted pink balm that “minimizes the appearance of fine lines”. I personally wear a liquid lipstick, a nude lipstick, or an spf lip balm so I think this will be a lovely addition to the “bare” lip look I love so much.

The third item in my box this month is a Beautaniq Beauty Blush Serum in Sunrise (.35 oz) and is a full size! The tube says it’s a lip and cheek cream color. I have never heard of Beautaniq (but right away the name kinda bothers me) and I haven’t had any prior success with cheek stains. I am a little intrigued, it’s infused with Vitamin E and apricot seed oil so it’s claim that it’s more like “tinted skincare” than makeup could be true. Next up is the Michael Todd Charcoal Detox Deep Pore Gel Cleanser (.33 oz) for Acne Prone and Oily Skin. This is another brand I am unfamiliar with. I am very happy with my current gel cleanser (CosRx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser) but LOVE products with charcoal (I put it in most my mud masks and brush my teeth with it a couple times a week) and can always use this for the gym or travel.

The last sample in my July Birchbox Select – Beta is an R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste (.25 oz). Finally! I have been waiting to get a dry shampoo sample for years! I don’t use most of the hair care samples that I receive in subscription boxes so it’s kind of been causing me to feel chagrined that I keep getting all these damn conditioners and sprays but no dry shampoo. I have never tried a dry shampoo, my hair is extremely thick and densely packed, and this dry shampoo says it is good for thick hair! Score!

One of the perks offered to Birchbox Select subscribers last month was $5 to spend on any item in the Birchbox shop. I think this is awesome and specifically encouraged me to spend more in their shop by checking out what ships for free and redeeming that $5 on one of those products. For my July box I chose the Acure Coconut + Argan Oil Cleansing Towelettes (30 towelettes) as I just ran out of facial wipes. These are normally priced at $6.99 so I ended up snagging these for $1.99, that’s a steal and it makes me very happy!

20170717_144632

My July 2017 Birchbox Select – Beta contained the following 5 items: Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Gel Eye Makeup Remover ($1.12 value), Jouer Lip Enhancer ($7.27 value), Beautaniq Beauty Blush Serum in SHADE ($16 value), Michael Todd Charcoal Detox Deep Pore Gel Cleanser ($1.15 value), R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste ($3.18 value) for a total sample value of $28.72. This is decent box, not one of my favorites, I could do without the blush serum and would have preferred something rather than the face wash but I will use all of these products.

My first Play! by Sephora (July 2017, bag #049)

I have been trying to sign up for Play! by Sephora for about a year now but they have never shipped to my area. Every month or two I would try to sign up and finally it worked last month!

Sephora opened up their Play! subscriptions to Alaskan and Hawaiian residents (they unfortunately still do not ship to US Territories). I was incredibly surprised to receive my Play! bag in the mail yesterday (July 15th) as I was under the impression they send the bags out on the 3rd week of the month.

20170716_141731The bag itself is thin, cheap, and not something I would reuse for any purpose. The design is nothing special and it has a drawstring. I mean, why even send this kind of bag? I wonder how many people actually use these for anything.

The first item in my July Play! bag is an IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara in Super Black (.17 oz). I’m guessing the size as there is no weight information on the packaging but it looks exactly like one I got from ipsy that was .17 oz (decent sample size considering the full-size is .30 oz). I wasn’t as impressed with this mascara over time as I was by it at first; it is prone to flaking, though I did find drastic improvement with using a tinted primer underneath. My next product is a Boscia Charcoal Pore Pudding Intensive Wash Treatment (.84 oz). I blown away at how huge this sample is! You really need to be heavy with some masks so it is really great to get a sample jar with enough for quite a few uses.

20170716_143134The third sample included is the MILK MAKEUP Cooling Water (.1 oz). This is a neat looking little push-up packaging with cooling gel inside to apply under the eyes or over face. I have some of their cheek tint in this same kind of packaging and I adore it, but it seems like a lot of wasted plastic for a fairly small sample amount of product. Packaging is a really big sell for some people though so I can see why they keep that style with their samples as well. On to a bare Minerals GEN NUDE Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Swag (.06 oz). This is another generous sample size, just under half the full-size tube. I just did a big ol’ post about how I’m never going to use any other liquid lipstick except Kat Von D. and Younique but bare minerals is an excellent brand AND this color looks amazing (website describes as a blushing mauve, oooh) so I’m going to have to give this one a try at work tomorrow and see if it can withstand my brutality.

Lastly in my July Play! bag is the Briogeo Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray (.75 oz). Another generous amount of product! Leave in sprays are my absolute favorite type of hair care products to get in beauty boxes, I am in constant need of it and I love the convenient size. The bonus fragrance sample is an Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine Cologne Absolue Pure Perfume (1.5 ml).

20170716_105226

This product card blows ipsy and Birchbox out of the galaxy.

The product information side of the insert has a superb layout and is bright and eye-catching.

It seems a little larger than necessary but you definitely wont have any problem finding how to use your product on this!

20170716_105206

The other side of the insert has tips for using your types of products and a card good for 50 bonus Beauty Insider Points if you make an in-person purchase of any item from a Sephora store.

I’m going to go to my local Sephora and see if I can find anything on clearance just to snag those points.

I have been looking at Play! spoilers and learned that you can find your bag number once it has shipped by looking at the item number on your invoice. My bag is #049 and appears to be one of the more coveted bags this month both to the products and their plentiful sizes, yay! I feel like I really lucked out, of all the spoilers I saw #049 is the bag I would have preferred this month!

My July 2017 Play! by Sephora bag contained the following 6 items: IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara in Super Black ($13.64 value), Boscia Charcoal Pore Pudding Intensive Wash Treatment ($11.41 value), MILK MAKEUP Cooling Water ($2 value), bare Minerals GEN NUDE Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Swag (.$8.31 value), Briogeo Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray ($3.86 value), and an Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine Cologne Absolue Pure Perfume ($1.46 value) for a total sample value of $40.68.  I am extremely satisfied with my first Play! bag. I will use every one of these items other than the perfume and am especially excited to try the Pudding Mask and the Liquid Lipcolor. I think this bag had an exceptional value and am so pleased that the fragrance is always considered a bonus item in addition to the regular five samples.

Are you a Play! subscriber? If so what bag number did you get?

Birchbox Select Beta

I get asked often what Birchbox Select Beta is so here’s a description and a summary of my personal experience with it the past three months. Birchbox (for those who are unfamiliar) is a monthly beauty subscription service sends you 5-6 product samples for $10/month, link if you’d like to try it out: Birchbox Sign-up. Use code ORIBESHINE to get a free travel-size Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream when you join or code MESMERIZE to get a Pixi by Petra Eye Shadow when you rejoin at checkout.

20170602_162858a

Birchbox Select Beta is a new subscription option offered by Birchbox. It is basically an upgraded version of the classic Birchbox, offering more options and customization. Birchbox Select subscribers receive 5 products per box and pay $15/ month to choose from the following options:

  1. Spotlight Box –  Choose a spotlight or curated box; these focus on something specific like eye products, summer products, products for wavy hair, etc. They have many to choose from each month and are normally priced at $15/box.
  2. Pick One, Skip One – Choose a product type to receive, choose a type not to receive.
  3. Swap for Points – Trade your box for points to spend in the shop.
  4. Other things that vary per month – for example $5 off anything from the shop that ships for free with your box that month.

The reasons I chose to go Birchbox Select – Beta:

  •  I don’t wear perfume and 6 samples a year (the minimum Birchbox profile lets you set) is still far too many,
  •  I don’t use shampoo and conditioner samples which are sent a lot,
  •  Birchbox for me is mainly a skincare subscription, I get my makeup samples from ipsy and Play! by Sephora, so being able to customize to ensure products I will use are included seems worth an extra $5 to me,
  •  I stopped subscribing to WIN! (low sample value) and 3B/Beauty Beyond Borders (sold off their business and basically said fuck you to their grandfathered in customers who had a $2/month discount) so though I could just pocket the $22 savings, I’m  easily justifying the $5 expense to test new waters and have more of a say in my subscription.

I am currently waiting for my third Birchbox Select Beta box to arrive. My first Select Beta box was not sent; they sent me a regular box instead, review here.  In brief, I was refunded the $15 and it was a decent box sent so +1 to them. My second Select Beta box arrived as ordered but the item I chose was too light for me to use, review here. I contacted Customer Service and they are sending me a replacement sample in the correct color, currently en route so another +1.

For all three of the months I’ve subscribed to Birchbox Select – Beta I have chosen the same option; Pick One, Skip One. Every month I have chosen to skip a fragrance. My picks have been (in order) Skincare – Exfoliator, Makeup – Eyebrow, Skincare – Eye. This month I took advantage of one of the Select bonus offers, $5 off an item that ships with your box. I chose the Acure Organics Coconut & Argan Oil Cleansing Towelettes (30 towelettes) priced at $6.99 that cost me $1.99.

It’s been a rocky beta ride so far but Birchbox Customer Service keeps making it right so I’m excited to see what makes it through for July!
